Over in Chicago's lakeside Edgewater neighborhood, an extreme makeover of a dingy 1970s home proves that even homes considered teardowns can be salvaged to some degree. Completed by local design-build firm Nicholas Design Collaborative, the Periscope House—named for the sleek mod volume that cantilevers slightly over the front yard—expands the original two-bedroom house into a four-bedroom contemporary courtyard residence. While the firm kept the existing structure's floor, roof, and brick garden walls, the interiors are pretty spanking new (and true to early renderings), featuring large sliding glass doors connecting ground-floor living areas to the exterior.
